I really do love a lot about Photos but I do keep running up against things constantly. Like if they sat down and tried to assign names to people in 1000 images, I bet they’d get frustrated and that feature would work a lot better.

This has gotten better over the years (and worse) but it is still not as quick and easy as it could be with a few changes. Its really hard to quickly go through and name people in a large number of photos. Like they don’t really use their own features. I feel like the engineers who work on Photos don’t actually use the People section with large libraries for there own use. Having to quit and relaunch after every change made an already arduous tasks that much more difficult, but I finally categorized or got rid of all the unnamed people.Įssentially, there are two major bugs - one with the image cache and one with syncing/refreshing the datasource for the collection view. Or dragging a person/marking as favorite would leave them in both places until quit/relaunch. Or starting to name someone would pop up a list of possible names but wouldn’t include some of the names, but typing the name of an existing person would create a new person with that name. Or merging two people would leave the merged person there until quit/relaunch. Like if I merged two people, than all the photos for all the people would disappear and I’d get grey rectangles instead, until I quit and relaunched. Many of them were different “People” but were really the same person and/or Photos of people I’d named. They were just identified as people by Photos with no name. Such a resource intensive feature should always have a disable option but to not have considered how the professional community would be impacted by this decision is another huge fail on Apple's part.I have 71,000+ photos and 200 named people but the 1000+ people were not people I’d named.

On my account, Photos has stopped scanning remaining images and has been stuck at the same number for the past week despite the fact that we use an iMac that NEVER goes to sleep. At this point, we are seriously considering that her next computer will not be an Apple which is ironic given the reputation Apple has built up over the years with photographers.īeing someone who also professionally works with computers of all makes, I am partial to Apple myself but have to admit that this is ridiculous. It is very un-Apple to not have considered this aspect of photography. I'm incredulous that Apple would have chosen to go down this path. With iCloud Photos enabled, this should allow the same photos to have the same people identified in each of them.

Having checked online, there does not appear to be a way to disable this feature. Apple doesn’t send names or images, just these shorthand notations. Ironically, it's not only useless but actually frustrates her because she doesn't want any of her clients in her 'Memories' or 'People' searches. Photos consumes quite a bit of resources running face recognition. She downloads hundreds of pictures every day.
